Handmade Metal Balcony Planter: Long Herb Flower Pot for Small Spaces

These handmade metal window box planters are ideal for balconies, rooftops, patios, driveways or anywhere you want to introduce greenery and structure — particularly suited to apartment and city living where space is limited but impact matters.

Made in Grantham, Lincolnshire, each planter is individually handcrafted using high-quality industrial roofing steel. I do not supply garden centres and I do not mass produce — most pieces are made to order — so you can be confident these are not something everyone in your neighbourhood will own.

Material & Construction

• 0.7mm gauge coated steel (industrial roofing grade)
• Powder coated polyester finish
• Rear seams hand-riveted with matching rivets where available
• Additional rivets are added to the base to provide extra centre strength across the 150cm length
• Sturdy, all-steel construction

These are strong and durable planters, however they are not watertight and must be lined before planting.

Finish Options

The smooth polyester finish is available in:

• Slate Blue (BS18B29 – a very grey tone with a subtle blue tint)
• Black
• White

The smooth finish is supplied with a protective film, which must be removed prior to use. This helps prevent marks during manufacture and delivery.

Please note: the smooth finish can mark or scratch more easily and is therefore not recommended for busy or high-traffic areas.

Black is also available in a textured leather-grain finish at the same price, which is significantly more durable and better suited to high-use spaces.

Planting & Lining Instructions

These planters are not watertight, so lining is essential.

We recommend using a pond liner or heavy-duty plastic liner.
Place the liner loosely inside the planter, ensuring it covers the base and all internal sides. Allow enough excess to gently fold over the top rim.

Once filled with compost, the weight of the soil will hold the liner securely in place. You can then neatly trim away any visible excess liner from the top edge.

If drainage is required, pierce small holes in the liner at the base before filling.

For balcony use, please ensure appropriate drainage is considered for your space to avoid water pooling.

This lining method helps protect the metal and extend the life of the planter.

Safety Edge

An optional black rubber safety trim is included for the top rim. This can be removed once in position if preferred, but is supplied as the raw metal edges can be sharp.

Handmade & Material Notes

All planters are handmade using prime industrial roofing materials. In some cases, material that would otherwise have been destined for scrap is repurposed.

This means the finished item may occasionally show minor cosmetic marks or small imperfections — nothing detrimental to its function, simply part of the material’s history.

Bespoke sizes and colours are very welcome. Please note that custom orders may require prime (non off-cut) material, which can affect pricing.

Postage Information

Due to the 150cm length, this item qualifies as an excess parcel size with UK couriers. A significant portion of the overall price reflects carriage costs (currently approximately £65 including VAT), which are unfortunately outside of my control.
